Stadler Rail SMILE SBB ‘Giruno’

‘Giruno’ is the name given by the Swiss railways (SBB) to a new type of train – 250 km/h topspeed, partially low floor – for international (Eurocity) passenger services connecting Zurich, Basel with Milan and Frankfurt a/M. The trains will be the backbone of the intercity fleet to be used in the new Gotthard and Ceneri base tunnels.

SBB ordered 29 11-car EMU from Stadler Rail in 2014. The contract also included options for 92 additional vehicles. It was the first single-deck low-floor high-speed train compliant in full with the terms of the Act on the Elimination of Discrimination against People with Disabilities.

Stadler has named this type of train ‘SMILE’. SBB was the first customer for the product.
