The first Class 802/2 bimodal-MU for First Group/Transpennine is on its way from japan to the UK. Alpha Trains will receive 19 five-car trains that can operate using diesel or electric power.
The trains will operate between Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle and Edinburgh and enter service in 2019. Currently, three different types of new rolling stock are being produced for First Group/Transpennine. These are all branded as ‘Nova’ trains:
- Nova 1 = Hitachi Rail BMUs class 802/2
- Nova 2 = CAF Civity UK EMUs class 397
- Nova 3 = CAF Mk.5a coaches in push pull operation with class 68 diesel locos
