Nowadays, the stickers on a locomotive can remain in good condition for years. “Advertising locomotives” that have been running for 5, 6, or even 7 years with the same film are not uncommon—films that still look great after all those years, mind you. Nevertheless, there are reasons to replace stickers prematurely, such as damage caused by graffiti or aggressive washing methods. MEG has not disclosed the exact reason for the replacement, but it was necessary.
Locomotive ELP 2159 is one of five engines ELP (European Locomotive Leasing) leased to MEG, Mitteldeutsche Eisenbahn, part of the Deutsche Bahn group. The locomotive entered service in 2021 and, like its four sister units (217, 225, 226, 235, and 239), was given a design with red cabs and a light grey middle section featuring advertising for its operations. Locomotive 225, for example, aimed to recruit staff with the slogan, “Stell die Weichen für deine Zukunft” (“Set the course for your future”).
This brings us to the most striking aspect of the new sticker design: the look is entirely different. Locomotive 225 now features a design inspired by MEG’s branding, which has been used since 2022 on Class 145 locomotives taken over from DB Cargo and repainted as part of their refurbishment (145 022, 025, 029, 052, 058, 061, 065, 075).
