[design] The Academy of Superheroes – PKP IC EU160 design series

Starting from 11.06.2024, a PKP Intercity locomotive bearing the image of the eminent scientist Jan Czochralski will travel around Poland. The presentation of Griffin EU160 in the commemorative livery took place at Katowice station.

PKP Intercity, together with the Nauka Foundation, settled the competition conducted as part of the project ‘Trail of the Academy of Superheroes’. In a nationwide survey, everyone could cast their vote for one of ten outstanding Polish scientists. Candidates included Maria Skłodowska-Curie and Ignacy Łukasiewicz. The winner was Jan Czochralski, an eminent chemist and metallurgist whose inventions were used, among others, in the railway industry.

EU160-017 was presented on 11.06.2024 at the Central Station in Katowice with its new graphic design. The locomotive will be running trains throughout the country for the next six months. It will visit such cities as Poznań, Lublin, Białystok, and Świnoujście. PKP Intercity does not reveal specific routes, and together with the foundation, it encourages people to keep an eye on the tracks and stations.

The ‘Superhero Academy Trail’ campaign

The initiative includes a survey and creating a map of the ‘Trail of the Academy of Superheroes’ with a guidebook containing proposals for train trips to places associated with Polish science. An interactive map version will also be prepared, and inspiring educational films will be broadcast. In addition, engaging popular science lectures will be held at railway stations in Polish cities, sure to delight all knowledge enthusiasts.
