[passenger] NS orders more ICNG specifically for services to Germany

It has been buzzing for quite some while. Now, the Dutch media have started to report on the Dutch railways (NS) ordering extra ICNG trainsets for services from and to Germany. In total, 10 extra units will be ‘NL+DE’ bringing the total fleet to 109. The curious thing is that it is still pretty unclear what NS is planning to do with its ‘German’ ICNGs.

Alstom already built two ‘Germany’ trains for testing and certification. In December 2023, Railcolor showed you unit 3352 on its way to Velim:

  • 79x ICNG: Netherlands: 1,5kV DC, 25 kV 50Hz AC > 5- and 8-car sets.
  • 20x ICNG-B: Netherlands + Belgium, 1,5kV DC, 3kV DC, 25 kV 50Hz AC > 8-car sets.
  • 10x ICNG-D: Netherlands + Germany, 1,5kV DC, 15kV 16 2/3Hz AC, 25 kV 50Hz AC > 8-car sets.

It is rumoured more ICNG-D units are being ordered, but this has not yet been confirmed.

Delivery, current status:

Putting the new ICNG trains in service in the Netherlands is delayed and is slowpaced. So far, around 15 units (both 3100 and 3200) have been active in commercial service.
