More and more passengers are expected to transition to railways in Germany’s Rhineland – a trend to which the Cologne S-Bahn network needs to adapt by extending and improving its capacity. A new fleet of trains would also be required to support these trends. Thus, a tender has been launched by Nahverkehr Rheinland (NVR) and Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR). But the ongoing preparations extend much more profoundly with a design concept for the future trains already in place. Let’s look at how it solves the needs of two very different groups of passengers.
