[FREE / design] RRReis in reality – first restyled Arriva GTW in service

Arriva 374 is the first Arriva GTW with the new RRReis livery. Bram Stienissen caught the DMU on May 8, 2025 while it was passing through Doetinchem de Huet on it’s way to Winterswijk as train 30921:

This is the new look for the Arriva passenger trains on the lines:

  • Arnhem – Doetinchem – Winterswijk;
  • Arnhem – Tiel;
  • Apeldoorn – Zutphen;
  • Zutphen – Winterswijk.

The RRReis brand is used by the provinces of Overrijsel, Gelderland, and Flevoland.

Below you see the original design plan – the real train did not get the big RRR on its power-car and the icons for special purposes are white instead of purple:

Arriva Netherlands to launch new transport contract in Gelderland from December 2025

Starting in December 2025, Arriva Netherlands will begin operating under a new transport contract in the Province of Gelderland. The contract, which includes both bus and train services, is valued at approximately EUR 2 billion and spans an initial ten-year period, with the option to extend by an additional seven years—bringing the potential total to 17 years, through to 2042.

Arriva is no newcomer to the region, having operated bus services in Rivierenland since 2003 and in Achterhoek since 2010. Train operations were added in 2012.

Fleet Expansion: From 24 to 33, then 37 diesel trains

Currently, Arriva operates 24 diesel multiple units (DMUs) in the region. These include two- and three-car Stadler GTW models—GTW 2/6 (102xx) and GTW 2/8 (103xx)—all in the signature red and cream livery. This year, Arriva plans to add nine more GTW 2/8 DMUs (504x), formerly part of the Nijmegen–Arnhem (Breng) concession, to its fleet.

An additional four train sets will be introduced in 2028, coinciding with the launch of the new RegioExpress service between Arnhem and Doetinchem.

All of these trains will be upgraded as part of the RRReis refurbishment program, which focuses on enhancing passenger comfort and operational efficiency. Key improvements include:

  • Cleaner, more efficient engines
  • Refreshed interiors and updated passenger information systems
  • Installation of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) on board
  • Toilets installed in all trains by October 2027—two years ahead of the planned deadline

This transition will also mark the phasing out of several older train liveries from the region:
