Nova Gorica and Gorizia have been proclaimed European Capital of Culture 2025. The two cities on the border between Italy and Slovenia are excited, especially in the field of railways.
Infrastructure works
On 01.02.2024, renovation work began on the Nova Gorica railway station in Slovenia and the nearby Evropa Trg (Europe Square) in front of the station, which will be one of the main venues for the events that will see Gorica and Nova Gorica united as European Capital of Culture in 2025. The cost of the entire project is estimated at around EUR 61 million. After the renovation, only six of the 14 current railway tracks will remain and be used for passenger transport. Initially, freight trains will continue to go to Nova Gorica, but the future is uncertain.
