In late 2018, VIA Rail Canada ordered 32 trainsets from Siemens Mobility for its Intercity passenger services on its main route, the Québec City—Windsor corridor. Siemens won the tender with its Charger locomotives and Venture coaches. The combination of locomotive and cab car enables bidirectional operations. The trains are built in Siemens’ Sacramento plant in the United States.
On 27.06.2024, VIA Rail reached a new milestone as the first new trains entered commercial service in Southwestern Ontario, making the rolling stock modernization visible on the entire Québec City-Windsor corridor. Eighteen trainsets have been delivered to VIA Rail so far. Ten sets have entered service, and another eight trainsets are still being tested. Let’s look at where we stand and why there is a very yellow train.
