We are approaching a remarkable moment in German railway history, at least for the fans of number systems (we!). It feels like something from another era, having more than 1,000 locomotives of a single design in Germany, all registered in a single number sequence. The old German computer number system from 1968 allows only 1,000 railway vehicles to be of one ‘Baureihe’, something that never really was a problem, until now, with Siemens approaching the remarkable milestone of producing more than 1,000 Vectrons registered in Germany – numbered 91 80 6193 XXX-Y.
