Railcolor News has been following the developments regarding the latest order for 21 Končar EMUs for HŽ Putnički prijevoz (HŽ PP). While production of this newest batch is evolving steadily, the news of an upcoming BEMU procurement broke out recently in Croatian media.
In recent media coverage from Croatia, related to an official visit to the Končar plant, it has been stated that procurement for the delivery of two battery-powered trains has been planned. Namely, these would be two “prototype” units, valued at EUR 13.3 million. Funding for the vehicles is to be sourced from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
This would potentially represent an opportunity for local manufacturer Končar Electric Vehicles to extend its successful low-floor regional passenger train platform.
Delays in production of the current order for 21 EMUs
The manufacturer is currently busy producing 21 EMUs for HŽ PP, which were commissioned in 2020. The original deadline for delivering all trainsets from the order is December 2023. However, it has been stated that the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine has negatively affected the project, with a significant increase in the prices of raw materials, among other factors. A solution to the situation is being sought together with HŽ PP. Meanwhile, unit 6112 017 has been the factory’s latest EMU to be outshopped.
