The project is in the planning/construction phase, according to Trenitalia, so pretty soon we expect a new version of Hitachi Rail’s Caravaggio a.k.a. Trenitalia Rock; the hybrid. 43 such trains are on order. They will be electric but also feature battery packs and a diesel engine. Trenitalia plans to employ the trains on Sicily, and Sardinia, and in the Tuscany, Aosta Valley, and Lazio regions.
So the electric trains can also be used on routes without catenary. They will be built in the Hitachi factories of Pistoia, Naples and Reggio Calabria. The maximum speed will be 160 km/h.
