On 04.11.1998 the French national rail operator SNCF and Alstom signed a contract for developing new electrical locomotives for SNCF’s freight division FRET. This initial order included ninety two-system locomotives (1,5kV DC + 25kV 50Hz AC) for domestic freight transport. This type became known as series ‘BB 27000’. In November 2001 427002 was delivered as the first loco of this new series.
