On 09.05.2025, the first Sm7 FLIRT EMU, manufactured by Stadler Rail for VR, arrived in Finland. The train was delivered in four parts to the port of Hanko aboard the Finnlines vessel Finntide. The following day, these components were lifted onto their bogies and assembled into a complete train unit.
This delivery marks a key achievement in the strategic partnership between VR and Stadler, initiated at the end of 2022. Throughout 2023 and 2024, the two companies collaborated closely to design a commuter train solution tailored to VR’s specific requirements. Production of various components and subsystems commenced last year, with final assembly of the first units at Stadler’s facility in Poland during the autumn and spring.

Add more green, please!
Unlike the impression assumed in 2022 (see below), the train now features fully green fronts and doors. The same colour is prominent along the sides, with horizontal lines replacing the original thin vertical stripes.
The best is yet to come
The next phase will start commissioning and testing, during which three Sm7 train units will arrive in Finland. This testing period, from summer 2025 through early 2026, will ensure the new fleet meets all operational and regulatory standards.
The first units will enter commercial service after successfully completing testing and receiving regulatory approval. Serial production of the remaining trains will follow, and they are expected to arrive throughout 2026 and 2027. These subsequent units will undergo only routine testing, enabling a more streamlined introduction into regular service. Full fleet deployment is projected for early 2028.
