[locomotive] How Vectron locomotives bridged the gap between ČD and ČD Cargo – but the deal has ended

It has been over a year since Vectron locomotives, leased by České dráhy (ČD) from RS Lease, started operating at the front of ČD Cargo trains. However, this arrangement is ending with the introduction of the new timetable.

What happened?

České dráhy agreed with RS Lease to deliver a significant number of Vectrons in 2024—up to 22 out of a contract for 50 locomotives. These Vectrons were intended to replace older locomotives that ČD decided not to upgrade with ETCS signalling equipment due to age. While the older locomotives could still reliably run passenger trains in 2024, the result was that ČD found themselves with more Vectrons than they needed.
