Today, we continue with the fifth part of our review of orders for new locomotives and passenger trains from European state-owned companies. After covering Italy, the Czech Republic, Austria, and Romania we now turn our attention to Slovenia, where Slovenske železnice (SŽ) is investing significantly to modernize its fleet and improve both passenger and freight services:

Passenger trains
In June 2023, SŽ-PP and Stadler signed a contract to deliver 20 extra FLIRT DMUs, ready to be upgraded to DEMU. Unit 610-103/104 was seen on its way to the Żmigród test centre last week. With the 21 existing FLIRT DMUs (Class 610.0), SŽ-PP will soon operate 41 units, part of a fleet of 72 Stadler trains. The first sets are expected to be delivered in early 2025, replacing all older diesel units (class 711, 713/714 and 813/814).
Passenger coaches
As the only candidate who successfully applied to the tender, Magyar Vagon Vasúti Kft. offered SŽ-PP five sets of four coaches. It is yet unclear if they are offering semi-permanently coupled coaches or the usual UIC-Z coaches with UIC couplers:
- 5x IC+COMBO: bistro, room for the conductor, universal WC cabin, six seats for dining, 12 seats in 2nd class and three places for wheelchairs
- 15x IC+AB: 15 seats in 1st class and 58 seats in 2nd class, 2 standard toilet cabins
The contract is yet to be signed.
Locomotives
As we reported in June, Alstom was the only candidate to apply to a tender to deliver 30 4-axle multi-system electric locomotives for SŽ-TP, which would replace older class 363 locomotives. So far, we only know that Alstom has sent its offer to SŽ-TP and is awaiting a response.
As the first tender failed, SŽ-PP recently announced a new tender to purchase four new locomotives. As of 16.10.2024, the tender has not yet been released.
