Green it is, very green. After making red the default colour for all high-speed trains and introducing blue as the standard colour for Intercity trains, Trenitalia has now presented the new livery for regional transport. On 02.10.2024, Trenitalia unveiled its new “Regionale” brand. This means that the current blue and silver standard, with the orange and bright green details, has only lasted 10 years. Which trains will change colours, and why, we explain to you in this article:
The new ‘Regionale’ segment, which joins “Frecciarossa” and “Intercity,” was presented at Roma Ostiense station. For the occasion, the green ETR 621 n.048 was parked at platform 1. It is the same train which Railcolor News brought to you a few days ago, partially covered:
The new livery, a two-tone green with yellow, is quite vivid compared with the previous one. On the nose is the latest brand symbol—which looks a bit like a snail to us, or a kolibri—which can be combined with the name “Regionale” or just an “R”. Nothing has been changed inside, with the seats still in blue and yellow.
Two more changes
Two remarkable things were unofficially confirmed during the press conference:
- The “Regionale” brand name is more dominant than the Trenitalia brand. The idea is to promote “Regional,” “Intercity,” and “Frecciarossa” more than “Trenitalia.” You must look closely to find the (white) Trenitalia logos on the ETR 621.
- Secondly, the musical names used for the different types of rolling stock will disappear. Thus, we can say goodbye to Rock, Pop, Blues, Swing, and Jazz.
Again, the absence of red on the front of the train is also remarkable —a long-lasting mandatory design feature for trains in Italy, especially on older rolling stock. Also, the doors do not have a colour that is very different from the rest of the train. Instead, a wide black border was created to mark their outlines for visually impaired people.
Which trains will be change?
No money nor effort is saved for the rebranding. The livery change will involve the entire fleet currently in operation except the units due to be scrapped. This includes the trains of the Autonomous Regions that are not owned by Trenitalia*:
- Blues;
- BTR 813*;
- ATR 365*;
- ETR 56x;
- ETR 170*, 340, 343, 360*;
- Jazz:
- Minetto Diesel;
- Minuetto electric;
- Pop;
- Rock;
- Swing;
- TAF;
- E.464;
- Vivalto coaches;
- MD coaches.
Progress plans to have half the fleet in the new livery by the end of 2027 (!). The entire regional fleet is expected to have changed colours by 2033.
The following trains to change
According to Trenitalia, the Pop and Blues units are following for rebranding. Above, you see the design applied to a Pop train, which will look quite different in the livery created by Giugiaro Design, the industrial and transport design division of Italdesign.
