In 2020, it became evident that Abellio Germany had significant financial problems. The German subsidiary of Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) claimed contracts had to be changed, and compensations were needed for rising costs caused by external factors. Examples were higher wages due to central labour agreements, strict fining over delayed services (partly due to construction and maintenance work), and a shortage of train drivers.
