In 1996, Ferrovie dello Stato ordered eighty new locomotives from Ansaldo, Firema Trasporti (Fiore-Casertane), ITIN and SOFER. The result was an updated version of the then very young class E.402A. Logically, the new machines were classified as E.402B.
