[EG] Egyptian national railways order six diesel-electric Talgo trains

On 06.04.2019, the Egyptian national railway company ENR confirmed that it has awarded Talgo a contract for the construction and maintenance of six new trains – Each of these will have a diesel-electric locomotive, a technical car or power car and 14 passenger cars. These will be operated on Egypt’s main route of the country, connecting the cities of Alexandria, Cairo and Aswan.

  • The contract amounts to EUR 158 million and includes 8 years of maintenance
  • Each train will have 492 seats (1st class + 2nd class + restaurant + PRM places)
  • Commercial speed of up to 160 km/h are possible

Talgo has experience with building high-comfort long-distance trains that are operated in challenging (desert) climates – Think about the Meca – Medina trains for Saudi Arabia. The trains for ENR will feature a certified indoor climate control for extreme temperatures and onboard WiFi connectivity throughout the train. Every seat in First class will have a LED screen for infotainment.

ENR launched and open purchase process in August 2016 as part of a project financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) – the final phase of bidding ended in October 2018. After the signing of the contract, which is scheduled to take place within weeks, Talgo will launch the project with the aim of delivering the trains in 2021 and 2022.
