[Design] TRI unveils new liveries for its Class 111 fleet

Locomotive 111 027 has emerged in a striking new TRI livery, featuring a blue, white, and red colour scheme with prominent blue cab ends. Meanwhile, 111 130 is next in line for a makeover and will sport a distinctive horizontal striping pattern around the entire body.

Tobias Richter of TRI explains the company’s approach: “We follow a different philosophy. Each locomotive should have its own identity—after all, everyone has different tastes. It also brings a practical benefit: drivers can spot ‘their’ locomotive from a distance without needing to read the unit number.”

TRI has confirmed that additional livery variations, including new designs for its Class 145 locomotives, are in the works. Both 111 027 and 111 130 are scheduled to operate in Baden-Württemberg and North Rhine-Westphalia.

About TRI

TRI Train Rental GmbH was founded in November 2013 with an initial focus on preserving historic railway vehicles. The company developed a model of refurbishing older rolling stock from this foundation for continued use in scheduled passenger services. This approach positioned TRI as a flexible substitute and emergency rail operator, serving various major transport companies across Germany.

Relying on the classic locomotive-and-coach principle, its operational scope includes short-interval S-Bahn traffic, regional express routes, and event-specific direct connections. The company currently owns over 15 mainline locomotives and more than 100 passenger coaches, including night and dining cars and sets of double-deck coaches. It uses its signature blue-white-red livery on its rolling stock, or it (re)applies classic Bundesbahn designs. Famous locomotives are the blue/black 110 428, 103 224 in ivory/red and 113 309 (E 10 1309) „Rheinpfeil“.

In 2020, the company gained independent railway operator status, and in 2022 it was certified as an Entity in Charge of Maintenance (ECM).

TRI currently has five Class 111 electrics in its fleet. 111 054 is the most famous at the moment—it has the 50s blue/black electric locomotive design from the Bundesbahn era, a design class 111 never had.
