[FREE / passenger] Sweden’s new high speed train will look like this:

Swedish state operator SJ is busy rolling out its modernized X 2000 fleet and is awaiting the delivery of new high speed trains (250 km/h). Currently, Alstom is completing the first cars of Sweden’s ‘framtidens snabbtåg’ (high-speed trains of the future)  in Hennigsdorf.

25 six-car units are on order – they will be the fastest in Sweden and will be deployed on long-distance train services between major cities in Sweden. They might also be used for  cross-border services to Denmark and Norway, complementing the existing X 2000 fleet.

The order is valued at EUR 680.2 million and is part of SJ’s EUR 1,17 billion investment in high-speed trains (new and upgraded). Entry into service is scheduled for 2026.

Colors and interior

In 2022, prelimiary visuals (below)  were published about what the trains will look like. Meanwhile we know the roof and fronts will get a darker grey color.

Exterior wise, the new trains show similarities with Bombardier’s (now Alstom’s) Zefiro platform, but with a different front. In terms of interior, the new trains will feature bicycle and luggage zones, as well as a fully equipped SJ Bistro with hot food and seating areas. All systems have been described as “technology-leading” with, for example, efficient connectivity and radio-transparent windows, silent soundproofed carriages. The interior impression below relates to the design featured in the modernized X 2000 trains seen recently.

Curious fact: The trains will have the ability to be moved by battery power to cope with power supply disruptions on the line.
