Hungarian rolling stock manufacturing and maintenance plant Dunakeszi Járműjavító (DJJ) has been acquired by Transmashholding (TMH) from Russia. With the plan to turn it into the manufacturing and servicing hub of TMH in the CEE region, this is the first TMH facility in the European Union.
The Dunakeszi Vehicle Repair Base (DJJ) has been on the market since 1911. After being a part of Bombardier Transportation between 2001 and 2014, the Hungarian government bought back the plant that, for example, currently assembles the new double-deck Kiss EMUs for MÁV. Back in 2016, DJJ established a joint-venture with TMH. Since this month, the workshop is 100% property of the Russian company.
An upgrading program for the plant is in the pipeline, which will turn it into a significant player in the European market, so it can participate in national and international tenders, TMH claims. TMH is currently the world’s fourth-largest rolling stock manufacturer, with an annual turnover of 5.9 billion euros, and with 100,000 employees in its 25 manufacturing plants globally.
TMH plans to assemble 680 passenger coaches for the Egyptian railways in Hungary, which are part of a 1,300-unit order. The first prototypes are currently being tested, the first coaches for Egypt should roll out at DJJ’s at the end of 2020. In the meantime, another TMH manufacturing plant in Russia, TVZ, takes care of the order.
After Chinese CRRC taking over the rolling stock manufacturing business of Vossloh, this is another manufacturer from outside Europe that establishes itself in this part of the world.
