[DE] Danke und Tschüss: The last months of Metronom operating the RE5

Another visible sign of the upcoming rebranding of line RE5 Cuxhaven – Hamburg: With special stickers operator Metronom says ‘Danke und Tschüss!’ after 11 years of service, DB Regio’s daughter company ‘Start’ will take over the concession for this line in December 2018. We wrote about this in the Locomotive Weekly 18/36.

Start has announced it will give the trains a ‘visual overhaul’ with new logos and symbols. This means locomotives and coaches remain white/yellow/blue, but get green DB Start stickers.

RE5 concessions

  • December 2007-2018: Metronom Eisenbahngesellschaft GmbH
  • December 2018-2027: Regionalverkehre Start Deutschland GmbH

On the RE5 Bombardier Twindexx double deck trains are being used, together with eight TRAXX P160 DE locomotives, in push-pull mode. Rolling stock is (and remains) property of Landesnahverkehrsgesellschaft Niedersachsen mbH (LNVG), the joint rolling stock pool of the German states of Nedersaksen, Hamburg and Bremen.

For the LNVG-pool Bombardier delivered eleven TRAXX locomotives in 2007, the designated 246 001-011. Over time, eight machines proved to be sufficient for the RE5, so 246 001, 010 and 011 were sold.
