Ferrovie Appulo Lucane (FAL), headquartered in Bari, has ordered one additional 2-car DMU and three further intermediate cars from Stadler Rail. The FAL fleet currently consists of eleven 2-car DMUs (type SB, 4/8) and six 3-car DMUs (type ST, 4/12) built and delivered between 2012 and 2014.
FAL operates passenger services on three lines in the south-east of Italy:
- Bari – Altamura – Matera
- Bari – Altamura – Potenza
- Potenza – Avigliana
The 950 mm-gauge FAL trains have adhesion traction and a top speed of 100 km/h. Their design was derived from the narrow-gauge vehicles Stadler built earlier for Ferrovie della Calabria. A 2-car consist offers 92 seats plus 8 tipping, a 3-car train has 157 and 10 respectively. Around 50% of the trains have a low-floor compartiments offering easier access.
