[CH] Coming in 2019: Self-powered multiple-unit trains for Rhätische Bahn

Rhätische Bahn (RhB) is rapidly renewing its fleet. Recently delivered, or under delivery are the Allegra multiple units (ABe 8/12, series 3501-3515), the Alvra articulated trains (6 car sets, ABi 5701-5706) and a new generation of driver trailers (type Ait 528/578). Now RhB has announced another new order, and again Stadler Rail will supply.

The contract includes 27 four-car metre-gauge train sets. It also includes an option for up to 20 additional vehicles. The total order volume amounts to CHF 285 million. It is the largest rolling stock procurement project in the history of the RhB. The first vehicle will be handed over in the summer of 2019.

The air-conditioned trains will have 35 seats in first class, 137 seats in second class and two wheelchair spaces. The trains will meet the requirements of the Swiss disability equality act (BehiG). The door width and the extensive low-floor area have been designed to ensure that guests can board and disembark as quickly and easily as possible. There will be sufficient space for bicycles, skis, sporting equipment, prams and luggage. The trains will have fully automatic couplings and an operating speed of 100 kph.

The first sets will go into operation in 2019, primarily in Prättigau and Engadin and from Klosters Platz to St. Moritz and Davos.
