On June 6 Alstom, concessionaire VLT Carioca and the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro celebrated the inauguration of the first tram network in the city. The project is ready on time for the upcoming Olympic Games. There are three lines with a total length of 28 km with 31 stops in total.
32 Alstom Citadis trams were built, that work entirely without catenary systems. They are partially powered from a third rail next to the track, and partially by supercapacitators.
The trams are 44 meters long. 27 sets were produced locally.
