Siemens and Newag will deliver a fully automated metro system for Line 3 in Sofia, capital of Bulgaria. They will also supply new metro’s of Inspiro type (Siemens design). Twenty trains will run under fully automated service using Siemens’ Train Guard MT system. The line should be in service in 2019.
An option was taken for an additional ten metro-trains. Siemens will build the car-bodies in Vienna and the bogies in Graz. Newag will execute the final assembly at its plant in Nowy Sacz, Poland. The new Sofia line 3 will be 18 kilometers long and have 18 stations, running from east to west. 70% of the necessary funds come from the European Union.
