For the second time, Siemens is selling Mireo trains to Baden-Württemberg (and Hessen and Rheinland-Pfalz). Earlier this year Ministerium für Verkehr Baden-Württemberg published the news that operator DB Regio won the concession for ‘Netz 4’ for which the new Siemens Mireo EMUs will be used. Now DB Regio is awarded the contract for ‘Netz 6b’, soon to be known as the ‘S-Bahn Rhein-Neckar’. Also, as of 2021 Mireo trains will enter S-Bahn services.
At the end of this year, the S-Bahn Rhein-Neckar will start. This network will radiate from Mannheim to cities such as Wiesbaden, Mainz, Worms, Karlsruhe and Eppingen. For the first years, existing trains will be used, from December 2021, the new Mireo’s will be introduced.
All vehicles will have leveled entry at platform height (76 cm) will feature five multi-purpose areas for wheelchairs, bicycles and buggies. Up to 26 bicycle parking spaces are planned for each trains.
The Netz 6b contract also includes the ‘Murgtäler Radexpress’ that will only run on Sundays during the summer. It connects Mannheim with its southern region (Bruchsal – Karlsruhe – Rastatt – Forbach – Baiersbronn).
